What chip must I wear?
If you already own a yellow Winningtime chip, don’t panic, these chips are still
being used and do work with our new equipment. However new chips bought from now
onwards will be the orange and green RaceTec chips
I already have a WinningTime chip, must I buy a RaceTec chip?
No, the WinningTime chips can still be used and do still work but if you would prefer a RaceTec chip you are welcome to buy a new one
What is a "chip", where do I wear it, and how does it work?
A chip is actually a Tiris transponder which is uniquely coded, so that every one can be identified. You should wear it either on your ankle (using the strap provided), or on your front fork using a specially provided bike mount (R20).
When it enters an electrical field, it is charged and releases a signal. Timing mats situated on the ground at the start and finish of an event are used to read this signal, and from this calculate a time for each athlete. Your time starts when the gun for your group is fired. Chips read optimally when they are positioned vertically, and when they have no metal between them and the ground. For running, there is no "wrong way" of wearing a chip.
BUT for cycling, DO NOT attach your chip to the front fork (metal in your axle/skewer will cause interference), your shoe lace (chips lies horizontally and there is the metal of the pedal between the chip and the ground), or any other metal tube of the bicycle.
Where do I get a chip?
You have a number of options for buying a chip. These are listed below. Chips cost R100, and are valid for life. Unfortunately we cannot send chips through the post as the risk of theft is too great.
(a) If you have already paid for a chip with an online entry previously, we will put it in your race pack if you are doing either the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge or the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.
(b) If the next event you will be doing is the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and you have not yet paid for a chip, you can come to our stand at the registration. Preferably on the Thursday because Friday and Saturday will be busy!
(d) If you live in Cape Town, you can buy a chip from the PPA offices, 9 Hill Park Lane, Mowbray. They offer a R20 discount to their members.
(e) Apart from at the Cycle Challenge and Cycle Tour, you can buy a chip at the registration of any event that is timed by RaceTec. Just look for the RaceTec stand, and come and buy one.
I paid for my timing chip now where do I get it?
Please note that if you have bought a chip, no chip number will be allocated to you until we actually give you the chip. This prevents the problem of us not having your chip on the day you choose to collect it.
Generally we sell chips only at an event. That way we can be sure that we get the details of the person we have given the chip to, and capture them on our system. However it is possible that you have bought a chip either through the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, or the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour.
If you have purchased through either of these events, you can collect your chip at the registration of any of our events.
If you are in Cape Town, you can also collect your chip from the PPA office, 9 Hill Park Lane, Mowbray.
